On Wednesday 11th October our friends at Worthing Judo Club hosted a Masterclass with Sensei Brian Jacks 10th Dan. A true legend of the sport, Brian has achieved so much throughout his Judo career and beyond – winning numerous international medals (including Olympic and World Bronze and double European Gold) as well as dominating the British and European editions of Superstars between 1979-80. His list of achievements really does go on. He inspired numerous players to take up the sport and it was great for some of our players to attend.
Both the junior and senior sessions were well attended, with Alex representing Brighton in the junior class and Steve, Laurence, Dave and Dan making an appearance in the seniors. It was great to see so many friendly faces from the area in attendance and at matside, including our honorary club president (and Brian Jacks’ first Sensei), Mick Leigh 8th Dan.
The senior class was built around the importance of having excellent technique on both the left and right side. Ground covered included kumi kata (gripping techniques), a sacrifice throw into a strangle and a nice turnover from the all fours position (the Brian Jacks special!). The masterclass ended with a short Q&A before Sensei Jacks signed copies of his recently published book (which you can buy here) and kindly posed for photos.
A huge thanks from Brighton Judo Club to Sensei Brian Jacks for such an excellent masterclass, and to Sensei Chris Cooper & Worthing Judo Club for organising and hosting a fantastic event. See below for a selection of photos from the Masterclass (thanks to Chris for allowing us to use some of his images!).
